Common Core Standards
- CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.7.7 Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions for further research and investigation.
- CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.7.8 Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.
using country reports
Every year, Lynhurst 7th and 8th Grade Center hosts an International Festival to highlight the different cultures represented in our school and around the world. Each homeroom is assigned a country and makes a poster highlighting interesting facts about the country: location, flag, culture, population, food, climate, etc. Students could use the Country Reports within the SRC to help complete their project.
Enter your country in the "Find" box; then check the "Country Reports" box.
Here is the Country Report for Nicaragua; just click on the title.
Here is the citation information, then scroll down for the country report.
SRc across content areas
Social Studies classes can examine primary source documents in the SRC.
A search on Abraham Lincoln within "Primary Source Documents" yielded nine hits, once I used the full text filter and limited the search to a lexile of 850-1100.
Examine primary source documents and speculate about its creator and context. Answer the following questions:
- What was happening during this time period?
- What was the creator's purpose in making this primary source?
- What does the creator do to get his/her point across?
- Who was this primary source's audience?
- What biases or stereotypes do you see?
